MOOSE JAW – Plain, salted or apple; Emmy Barr has a caramel for you.
“I like showing people how creative I can be.”
The family recipe has been handed down through four generations. Emmy does have her favourite: the pretzel ones, because of the texture.
Barr has Williams Syndrome, a genetic condition that can come with cardiovascular disease and disabilities in development and learning. It has presented challenges over Barr’s 20 years, but it hasn’t stopped her from honing her skills in the kitchen.
Now she’s taking her talents online in the Just Watch Me contest for entrepreneurs with special needs, which has brought a whirlwind of attention.
“A lot of people have been adding me on Facebook, then they want more caramel,” Barr said. “It’s been a crazy last couple of days.”
A class of six-and-seven year olds at Westmount Elementary School is pitching in for the campaign – and the initiative is all theirs.
“They made up the idea that we should contact the media, they thought we should make posters, they wanted to put it on Twitter,” said their teacher, Kathy Cassidy.
Their work also helped the students better understand disabilities.

What Barr has done is inspire even those closest to her.
“(When) things get tough, emotionally or physically, she’ll keep working away at it,” said her mother, Penny Barr.
Winning top prize ($1,000 cash, business starting kits and a $2,500 web design credit) could set Emmy Barr on her way to a long-term business goal.
“I’d like to maybe open up a coffee shop or something like that and maybe have caramel in it too,” Barr said.
If everyone around her has their way, this ‘Queen of Caramel’ will earn her crown when voting closes on February 17.
