EDMONTON — Starting next month, thousands of downtown commuters should expect a less congested drive into central Edmonton. On March 2, parking restrictions will be expanded on Stony Plain Road, west of 124 St.
Since last summer, the area has seen an increase in traffic because of the closure of 102 Ave. as the city replaces the Groat Road Bridge.
Last month, the city proposed removing 19 parking meters on Stony Plain Road and creating a temporary parking lot to accommodate businesses in the area. But the idea was met with opposition.
WATCH: A temporary plan to remove some parking metres in front of some businesses is not sitting well with the business owners. Vinesh Pratap reports.
“Any change that makes it less convenient for customers, makes the customers disappear, ” business owner Sarah Proudlock told Global News on Jan. 12.
Proudlock successfully appealed the zoning changes required to create the parking lot. As a result, the city will move to expand parking restrictions.

“The only parking we have is in front of our store.”
On March 2, parking will not be allowed at the meters on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., allowing a free flow of eastbound traffic into downtown. Parking will be allowed after 6 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends.
“We’ve heard from a lot of citizens that this is a problem area, and this solution provides a good compromise for both drivers and business owners,” said Gord Cebryk, Branch Manager of Traffic Operations in a city news release.
The changes will be in place for the next several months. The Groat Road Bridge is scheduled to re-open this fall.
