High-angle rescue at Saskatoon’s water treatment plant

SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Fire Department’s technical rescue team was deployed Monday to the city’s water treatment plant at 1030 Avenue H South. MD Ambulance called for assistance in removing a man around 11: 40 a.m.

It’s believed a contractor fell off a ladder, injuring his leg while working in the facility’s clarifier.

The technical rescue team used high-angle rope techniques to lift the man about six metres in a rescue basket. The rescue took over 11 minutes.

“A clarifier’s a large tank where we would normally have water going into that tank and then we would add chemicals to remove large particulates organics, sands, etc.,” said Troy Lafreniere, the water treatment plant manager.

“Right now, it’s empty, it’s been isolated for a number of months to do the work that they’re doing.”

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance in stable condition.
