SASKATOON – Fire department officials say there was no danger to the public after an ammonia leak at Saskatoon’s water treatment plant Monday evening. It happened around 9 p.m. at the plant located on Avenue H South.
Staff told arriving firefighters there had been a spill or release in the ammonia room located in the basement of the building, setting off ammonia detectors.

Firefighters wearing chemical suits entered the room and used water on the liquid. Built-in ventilation fans were activated to remove the vapours. A feeder valve, suspected to be the source of the leak, as then turned off.
Crews then monitored the levels of gas at regular intervals to ensure it was dropping. Firefighters remained on-scene for almost three hours.
No injuries were reported.
