Man in Edmonton facing charges after ambulance taken for joy ride

EDMONTON – A man who thought being in the driver’s seat of an ambulance is better than riding a stretcher in the back has been charged after a wild ride in and around Edmonton.

Police say an ambulance crew was attending to other duties at the University of Alberta Hospital on Wednesday when a man hopped in and took off.

The ambulance clipped another vehicle during the getaway, but no one was hurt.

Police officers and the RCMP followed the stolen ambulance until it came to a stop in an industrial area.

Wayne Douglas Christensen, who is 55, is charged with impaired driving and theft.

He is also accused of hit and run, driving while disqualified and flight from a police officer.
