WATCH: Julia Wong reports on the stabbing in North Street that has one woman in hospital and two in custody.
HALIFAX – A 22-year old woman remains in police custody Thursday morning, after a double-stabbing in Halifax’s North End.
Police received a call around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday of a disturbance on North Street near Maynard Street. When the first officers arrived on scene, they found a victim, who is in her 20s.
More officers arrived at the scene and the Emergency Response Team surrounded the building, with concentration centered on an upper floor unit. Officers entered the building after two hours.
“Based on information we received in the course of the investigation, we determined entry needed to be made in the apartment. Typically we’ll do that if we’re concerned for the safety of an individual,” Carr said.
Jessica Jones lives in the building and tells Global News that she heard loud screaming and went to investigate.
“I heard a bunch of screaming, like really loud terrified screaming and a lot of thumping. It didn’t sound like the regular running up and down the stairs thumping,” she said.
She was told by someone in the building that there was a person with a knife and she should go back to her apartment.
Two women, also in their 20s, were eventually led out of the building into police cruisers. One woman was heard loudly bawling as she was taken away.
“One is in police custody under arrest at this time. The other is still with us. She’s at the hospital receiving treatment. Her role in the situation is unknown as of yet,” Carr said.
One of the women was released in hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds, said Staff Sgt. Barb Saunders of the Halifax Regional Police.
The second remains in custody, and police expect to lay weapons-related charges on Thursday.
Police say all three women knew each other.
North Street was closed for at least two hours. It reopened shortly before 10 p.m.
