Botox for men becoming more popular

TORONTO – More men are facing societal-pressure to look young and healthy than ever and it’s causing a growing trend in dermatology: botox for men.

The surgery, stereotypically reserved for women, has become a growing trend in men. According to Dr. Julia Carroll, The Director of Dermatology and the Medcan Clinic, they have seen a “50 per cent increase in the number of men at Medcan that we’re injecting.”

Botox injections contain a protein, Botulinum toxin, which can help mask wrinkles in the face and make people look younger.

Todd Kehoe, a bar manager, compares the botox procedure that he received to other – more accepted – procedures. “Everyone does teeth whitening … they go for tans … this is just another procedure,” said Todd.

According to Dr. Carroll, many men who are receiving the injection are doing so for aesthetic reasons, “I’m seeing guys coming in before the wedding … you know they want to take a little edge off the smile lines for the wedding photos … job interviews … Christmas parties … you know big board meetings as well.”

Though it may ease cosmetic worries, Todd Kehoe believes that the treatment can also help people be successful, saying “When you look a little bit younger … I think you get more opportunities. I think as you get older your opportunities become smaller and smaller and smaller, but if you maintain a fresh look. I think opportunities are out there for you.”

Each injection costs $400 dollars and lasts approximately three to four months.
