The Kamloops Blazers had a brush with tragedy at the end of their recent road trip. The WHL team made a quick pit stop on the Coquihalla Highway Sunday when they crossed paths with a woman who collapsed after suffering a severe heart attack.

Athletic Trainer Colin Robinson and head coach Don Hay, a former firefighter, performed CPR on the woman before emergency workers arrived.

“Colin jumped in and hooked his machine up and I was able to do some chest compressions,” says Hay, who coached the Vancouver Giants prior to his current stint with the Blazers. “We just tried to help out.”

“You just kept hoping that she would come back and things would turn out positively,” he adds. “I think that once you start, your adrenaline’s going, you’re excited, you want her to succeed.”

Sadly, success was not in the cards as the 76-year-old woman died at the scene.

Both Robinson and Hay have been commended for their efforts, but Robinson says the focus should be on the woman who died and her family.

“That’s the real story here,” he says. “A beautiful lady has lost her life and there’s a family that’s missing someone they love very much.”
