Amelios pizzeria to close after 29 years in Montreal’s McGill Ghetto

MONTREAL — Many McGill and Concordia University students with fond memories of Amelios in the McGill Ghetto will sigh with nostalgia at the news the family-owned pizzeria will soon be closing its doors after nearly 30 years.

The restaurant, which has been open on Milton Street since 1985, is reportedly under the possession of a trustee and is facing bankruptcy.

Amelios’ owner, Christopher Scodras, who passed away last year, told the Montreal Gazette in 2010 that he resisted offers to franchise the mom-and-pop-owned pizzeria, suggesting at the time that he didn’t want his restaurant to lose the family touch.

A second Amelios location was opened by Scodras’ daughter Leah on Bernard Avenue in Outremont, but it closed in 2013.

In 2014, Montrealers said good-bye to Magnan’s Tavern, which closed its doors after 82 years in business, and to the high-end supper club, Globe, which closed after 20 years.
