OTTAWA – Lower gas prices fuelled a lower inflation rate in Saskatchewan. Statistics Canada says the consumer price index rose 1.7 per cent for the 12 months to December 2014.
That’s down from 2.1 per cent in November.
Gas prices have dropped 17.2 per cent in the past year. Excluding gas, prices in the province were up 2.7 per cent from December 2013.
The largest jumps were in food, with meat up 16.4 per cent and fresh vegetables increasing 10.4 per cent. Shelter costs were up 3.4 per cent while alcohol and tobacco prices were up 4.0 per cent.

Nationally, Canada’s annual inflation rate slowed to 1.5 per cent due to the fall of prices at the pump.
