City to tackle bus shelter vandalism

CALGARY – A city committee will be tackling the issue of bus shelter vandalism on Wednesday.

Ward 10 Councillor André Chabot raised the issue in June, asking a report be completed that examines how to prevent damage to the structures.

The Transit Shelter Vandalism report will be reviewed at the Transportation and Transit committee meeting.

“Through my notice of motion, there’s a number of things that are going to be occurring starting in March,” said Chabot. “[Such as] the ability to report [vandalism] more promptly. There’s going to be stickers on every shelter identifying the number that you can call (403-262-1000).”

Currently, the city’s bus shelters are maintained by a company called Outfront Media.

Chabot says they are looking at installing cameras to monitor trouble spots, and will also examine using a tougher glass in the shelters.

“There is some technology out there that would be very valuable for [Outfront Media] to consider, such as ISG tempered glass [which can] withstand like a hundred hits and still remain intact.”
