CALGARY – A University of Calgary professor is preparing to release a book examining Archie Comics and the complex social issues tackled within the series.

The book, titled 12 cent Archie, is the first scholarly study of Archie Comics.

Professor Bart Beaty’s publication presents an in-depth examination of the comic and its characters, within the context of the larger themes of American culture.

12 cent Archie focuses on life for Archie and his Riverdale High pals in the 1960s, with themes ranging from race and gender politics to the absence of Veronica’s mother and the significance of Betty’s ponytail.
