TORONTO — Comedian Margaret Cho responded Monday morning to criticism that her portrayal of a North Korean solider on the Golden Globe Awards was racist and insensitive.

“I’m of mixed North/South Korean descent,” she explained on Twitter. “You imprison, starve and brainwash my people you get made fun of by me.”

She used the hashtags “#hatersgonhate” and “FreeSpeech.”

The 46-year-old came under fire Sunday night for her portrayal of North Korean army general Cho Yung Ja, who was introduced as the newest member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

She made several appearances during the live broadcast to express displeasure — and at one point goose-stepped off the stage.

Cho and co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were poking fun at North Korea’s condemnation of The Interview (Poehler joked the night was a celebration of “all the movies that North Korea was OK with”).

On social media, Cho took some heat.

Others simply weren’t laughing at jokes at the expense of North Korea.
