SASKATOON – An extreme cold weather warning for Saskatoon ended Sunday and there is hope on the horizon. Last night in Saskatoon, temperatures dipped near -40 with the wind chill.

Warmer air may usher in single digit negative temperatures by Wednesday, according to Environment Canada.

“Our extended forecast right now, we are seeing in the single digits minus temperatures, could be anywhere for the next week from minus five to minus three highs, so it will be a welcome relieve I’m sure,” said Robyn Dyck, Environment Canada operational meteorologist.

“We basically right now are under the influence of an arctic surface ridge, so that will be moving out over the next day or two and what we’re seeing moving in behind is a really warm Pacific airmass and is going to bring some warm temperatures.”

The province experienced a similar warm-up last month.

“What we’re having in the Prairies and it happens all the time; it’s just where we’re located. We are basically always a battleground between arctic air masses and warmer Pacific air masses, so it just happens at this time of year, a back-and-forth, giving us some breaks which are nice,” said Dyck.

Mild temperatures should disperse over southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba as the next air mass moves in. Dyck pointed out that it’s hard to forecast more than a few days ahead.

She also advises people to keep an eye out for alerts, because if it does warm up, the roads will get icy when it inevitably cools off again.
