Rally in Halifax shows support for Paris terrorism attack victims

HALIFAX – The flag at Halifax’s Grand Parade was at half mast Sunday, as dozens of people braved the cold weather to stand in solidarity with France, nearly a week after terrorist attacks in Paris.

“Freedom was attacked last week. It’s not a question of only Paris, it happened in different countries lately,” said Alize Barth, who is originally from Paris and organized the rally.

“I think it’s important for people to say, ‘Enough is enough’ in a peaceful way. You don’t answer to violence with violence. You just get together and show that you are strong and nothing is going to destroy us,” Barth said.

People of all ages took part in the event to show their support for the victims of the Paris massacre and their families.

“I’m here today to support the world really. It’s all about peace, it’s about solidarity, it’s about unity,” said Gail Ferguson.

“It’s so disturbing to see things like that happen, but inspiring at the same time to see people come together,” said Scott Ferguson, who was one of about 50 people who came out.

Some in attendance held pens. Others held signs that read “Je Suis Charlie” — words that have recently become a symbol of free speech.

“People of different countries are getting together, people of different religions are getting together, because what they did was horrific. Killing all those people and for what?” Barth said.

“They say it’s for religion, it’s not for religion. It’s because they don’t live well and they want to make a point, but you don’t kill people because of a pencil, because of expression.”
