CALGARY – The weeks that follow a stroke can be a terrifying time for patients as they are left to deal with a new reality with disabilities, but a new Alberta program is giving those people access to peer support.

Participants can sit down with one of five volunteers who are coping well years after suffering a stroke themselves.
“After a stroke, patients have an enormous amount of questions and a lot of uncertainty and sometimes it’s best to hear that from someone that’s been there,” says Dr. Andrew Demchuk, stroke neurologist.
The program has five volunteer suppers so far and is looking for more. If you’ve suffered a stroke and are interested in helping, contact the Calgary Stroke program at (403) 944-8648.
