Investigators search for witnesses in Grande Prairie shooting

EDMONTON — The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is searching for anyone who may have witnessed the events that led to an officer-involved shooting in Grande Prairie on Friday.

Grande Prairie RCMP said officers responded to a reported armed robbery at a convenience store in Patterson Mall around 1:15 a.m Friday. When they arrived, officers were involved in a confrontation with a male suspect.

The 19-year-old man was shot and wounded by police. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

ASIRT said the 19-year-old had a replica handgun at the time of the incident.

“It actually looks like a real firearm,” said Sue Hughson, Executive Director of ASIRT. “If you compare it to the firearms that our officers carry, it’s very similar.”

“Whether it’s capable of firing anything or not, we will determine as our investigation continues.”

ASIRT sent out a plea Sunday morning for anyone who may have witnessed the events to come forward. Investigators hope to speak with the occupants of an SUV, which drove into the parking lot of the strip mall on Friday morning.
