TORONTO – Firefighters in Peel Region ventured onto a frozen pond Tuesday in order to save a German Shepherd who had fallen through the ice.
The incident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. near Heart Lake Road and Mayfield Road in Brampton.
Police say a witness called 911 about the dog being stuck on the ice. By the time firefighters and police approached the water, the dog had fallen through. A few of the emergency personnel donned dry suits and went onto the ice to rescue the dog.
“We went out and we were able to get him into a basket and pull him in,” said Jason Michel, one of the firefighters who rescued the dog. “He seemed pretty happy to see us. He seemed pretty energetic once he got out of the water.”
The dog was wrapped in a blanket and carried to shore. The animal has been taken to Animal Control for assessment but is expected to be ok.
