Impaired driving claims two more lives in Calgary

CALGARY – Impaired driving is believed to be involved in another deadly incident on Calgary roads over the weekend.

Two people were killed when a man driving a Lexus slammed into a Dodge Avenger while it was stopped at a red light near McKnight Blvd. and Deerfoot Trail.

Police say the Lexus was traveling at such high speeds that when it struck the Avenger it pushed it 51 metres down the roadway before it came to a stop.

“Anytime two people lose their lives it’s a horrible loss of life and very preventable,” says Duty Insp. Shawn Wallace.

23-year-old Ryan Kramer is now charged with impaired driving causing death. He was not hurt in the crash but the passenger in his vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Over the past two weekends, four people have been killed and 11 others have been injured in alcohol related collisions.

“There seems to be unending carnage on our streets and fatal accidents and the people out there aren’t getting the message,” says Duty Insp. Chris Butler. “They continue to drink and drive and they don’t seem to care what the consequences are going to be.”
