Montrealers receive more tickets than any other city in Quebec

MONTREAL – Police give out a lot of tickets in this city.

In fact, on average they hand out around 148,000 per month.

According to an Access to Information request by LaPresse, that’s more than double the 61,000 tickets given out during the same period in seven other cities in Quebec.

Together, those seven cities have a similar population to Montreal.

When pressed on the issue, the police union admits speed traps exist so officers can meet existing ticket quotas.

On Friday, Mayor Denis Coderre responded, saying Montreal cannot be compared to a group of other, smaller cities in the province.

Montreal is a metropolis, he says, and is naturally a hub for traffic – and traffic offences.

Coderre also insists the police union is only putting an emphasis on ticket quotas in order to bring it up at upcoming discussions over controversial pension reform.
