Charges laid in Ponoka kidnapping

EDMONTON – Seven people from central Alberta are facing a lengthy list of charges, including unlawful confinement and uttering threats.

The group is accused of forcing a 23-year-old man out of a home in Ponoka on December 17, before taking him to a different house.

Police set up surveillance at the home where the victim was believed to be held. Officers later witnessed the man being moved from the home into a vehicle. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested five people, and discovered the victim, who was not hurt.

Christine Kirkeby, Tyler Scott and Lane Dickson of Red Deer, Ashley Shewchuk and James Miller-Laney of Ponoka, Shane Kerik of Lacombe County and Zackary Purdy of Innisfail are all facing charges.

The group ranges in age from 19 to 42 years old.

They’re scheduled to appear in Ponoka Provincial Court Friday, Dec. 19.
