A former president of the BC Cancer Agency says it’s time for the organization to be independently reviewed.
Dr. Simon Sutcliffe says the high rate of turnover at senior management levels is worrisome and is jeopardizing the agency’s reputation as a world leader.
He’s now revealed that he left the job in 2009 because of concerns around how the cancer agency was being governed.
There have also been reports of internal tensions related to understaffing, and a lack of cooperation between clinicians and researchers.
“The thing that’s at issue here is what quality and performance do we expect from a publicly funded cancer control program,” says Sutcliffe. “We’ve had opinions being expressed there’s been a decline. There’s been a rebuttal by the health authority.”
Sutcliffe says he wants to know if there was in fact a decline at the agency, and if yes, does anything need to be done?
He says there needs to be an investigation into whether the decline, if one exists, was intentional so that appropriate actions can be taken.
