Arson factor in latest Saskatoon garage fire

SASKATOON – The latest garage fire in Saskatoon was intentionally set. Firefighters were called to the blaze in the Mount Royal neighbourhood around 10:20 p.m.

Crews arrived at 114 Avenue T North to find smoke coming from a small garage behind a vacant home. Firefighters entered to find smoke and a small fire, which was quickly extinguished.

No one was inside and damage was minimal.

It’s the tenth garage fire in the city since Oct. 1, causing more than half-a-million dollars in damage. Last year, there were four garage fires from the beginning of October to the end of December.

Saskatoon Fire Department officials say the fires have started for various reasons: welding, unattended cooking, overheated cords and arson. As many garages have flammable material and no smoke detectors, officials say caution should be exercised when using heat sources.
