Teacher, father of 2, killed in hit-and-run in Comox Valley

VANCOUVER – A beloved teacher, husband and father of two, has been identified as the victim in a hit-and-run on Vancouver Island Monday night.

Paul Bally was reported missing from his Fanny Bay home at 10:56 p.m. He was found in a ditch on Highway 19A near Curran Road about 45 minutes later. Bally had been cycling along the road when he was hit by a vehicle going southbound on the highway. He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.

He leaves behind his wife, Evelyn, two young children, and a number of former and current students. In a message posted on the Lake Trail Middle School website, administration says school staff and district critical incident counsellors were on site Wednesday to provide support and counselling. Regular school schedule was suspended for the morning to allow staff and students to absorb and react to the news.

“A regular schedule followed to provide both staff and students necessary structure at this difficult time.”

Friends have set up a funding page for Bally’s family and many are leaving condolences for a teacher they loved and respected.

Comox Valley RCMP is still looking for the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Officers believe it is either a Ford F250 truck, a Ford F350 truck, or an Excursion-style of vehicle. The manufacture date would be between 2002 and 2004. The colour of the vehicle is not known but it would have damage to the front passenger side, headlights and possibly the windshield.

If you have information about this collision you are asked to contact Sgt. M. Whitworth at the North Island Traffic service in Campbell River at 250-286-5646 or if you wish to remain anonymous you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
