Juice factory on wheels rolls into the Okanagan

It is being promoted as the first juice factory on wheels in Canada.

Okanagan resident Frank Dieter owns the Mobile Juice Factory, which presses apples from local orchards and turns them into fresh juice.

Dieter says many apples do not make it to the grocery stores because of colour defects, size or bruises.

He takes the low-grade apples and turns them into pasteurized juice.

Growers can then sell the juice directly to the public.

Orchardist Irene Lee hired the mobile factory for the first time on Wednesday to turn bins of apples into juice.

Lee chose to use the juice factory over selling her low grade apples to a packinghouse.

She says the last time she did that she did not even come close to covering the cost of production.

Lee expects to get about 500 boxes of juice, which she plans to sell.

The juice facility can be set up anywhere from an orchard to a farmer’s market.

Dieter says the technology has been used in Germany for many years but is new to the Okanagan.

“The juice is good for one year in a box unrefrigerated,” Dieter said. “When you open the seal, it is good for approximately three months.”

Dieter says his mobile juice factory will also help out the Kelowna Food Bank.

He plans to turn donated apples into juice, which can then be given away to families in need or be sold to raise money for the food bank.
