Exotic escaped cat killed on Vancouver Island

WATCH: A rare African serval cat has been on the loose on Vancouver Island. But as Kylie Stanton reports, there was an unfortunate end to the search.

The cat breeding community on Vancouver Island is in mourning after an exotic cat on the loose was killed by a truck in the Sooke area.

“I’m totally in shock. It was one of my babies. To have it killed needlessly like this is very, very heart-wrenching,” says Doug Nelson of Purrfound Cattery, who has four servals of his own.

“They do very well in a home environment as a pet…if they do go outside, they have to be on a harness, they have to be controlled, or in an indoor pen.”

The cat, named Samson, was sold to a breeder in Sooke several months ago, but had recently been seen in the wild, delighting some and worrying others. The driver who hit Samson is cooperating with conservation officers, who are investigating the death.
