CALGARY – A million Canadians suffer from a foot condition so painful that it can feel like walking on glass.
Plantar Fasciitis is caused by the straining of the tissue that stretches from the middle of the foot to the heel. It is one of the most common foot injuries.
Dr. Reed Ferber from the Running Injury Clinic at the University of Calgary has found a possible solution that is affordable for almost everyone; a simple over the counter orthotic.

“A custom made orthotic which can cost upwards of $450 isn’t necessarily needed all the time,” says Dr. Reed “An over the counter device which is upwards of $50 is what we used and you can buy it anywhere.”
Dr. Reed says the store-bought orthotics will reduce strain and stress within the tissue and will reduce pain.
Foot doctors will often prescribe orthotics for people with flat feet but Ferber’s research found that orthotics are very effective for people with normal feet in both treating and preventing the condition. They can also help prevent plantar fasciitis before it becomes a problem.
