WINNIPEG — Manitobans are being asked for input on how to cut our waste in half by 2020. The government wants to make Manitoba a leader in waste reduction.

Cutting the waste that goes to landfills in half would mean a reduction of 400 kilograms a year per person. This could potentially create over 400 green jobs and would be the equivalent to taking 71 thousand cars off the road.

Manitoba is one of the most wasteful provinces in Canada, only ranking above Saskatchewan and Alberta. Minister Gord Mackintosh is asking Manitobans to comment on these proposed actions:

  • Composting
  • Setting recycling targets
  • Banning disposal and burning of recyclable material
  • Increasing diversion of construction waste.

A public discussion is also being opened to what we should do with plastic bags and styrofoam.

The government will be taking feedback until March 20, 2015.
