Manitoba partners with aboriginal group to support sex assault victims

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government is launching a new program for indigenous sexual assault victims in Winnipeg. Ka Ni Kanichihk will provide culturally appropriate counselling and supports.

The program will hire and train a counsellor, and establish a network of elders available for support.

“The statistic of sexual violence against women is one we are not proud of,” said Kerri Irvin-Ross, minister of family services.

“Anyone who has experienced sexual violence needs immediate support to start the healing process.”
