Two Saskatoon psychiatric inmates die

Deaths of two Saskatoon psychiatric inmates in hospitals unrelated: Corrections. File / Global News

SASKATOON – Two inmates serving time at a federal psychiatric security centre in Saskatoon have died while receiving treatment for health problems. Correctional Service Canada says both inmates died Monday: one at the Regional Psychiatric Centre’s hospital unit and the other at Royal University Hospital in the city.

Assistant warden Tim Krause says the deaths aren’t related or criminal in any way and it’s a coincidence they happened on the same day. Krause says both inmates had serious and ongoing health problems.

John Favel, who was 57, was serving a sentence for second-degree murder, manslaughter and mischief.

Leon Hamilton, who was 64, was serving time for robbery, assaulting a peace officer and uttering death threats.

Krause says all cases involving the death of an inmate are reviewed, and the police and coroner have been notified.
