Charges laid in scheme using Edmonton women’s shelter

WATCH: Police have charged a woman for an alleged scheme related to WIN House which operates three women’s shelters.

EDMONTON – A 38-year-old woman is facing a long list of charges after Edmonton police found her going door-to-door, allegedly asking for money for WIN House.

Officers were contacted about a suspicious person in the area of 80 Avenue and 109 Street. When they arrived, they found the woman canvassing the neighbourhood allegedly on behalf of WIN House, a non-profit agency that operates three shelters for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Police say the woman had a forged WIN House ID and donor receipt book with her at the time.

Mia Christine Kuiken is facing 30 charges including 14 counts of fraud, 12 counts of forgery and possession of stolen property.

WIN House posted a short message on its website about its policy on door-to-door canvassing.

Investigators believe Kuiken may have been going door-to-door in other neighbourhoods across Edmonton for several months. Police would like to speak with anyone who made a donation to Kuiken. If you have information about this case, contact police at 780-423-4567.
