Police warn Calgarians about donation scam

Police have received several complaints from Calgarians who have been contacted by phone by a person pretending to be raising funds for various causes that are supported by the Calgary Police Service.

The callers usually state they will only accept a minimum donation of $25 and will only accept credit cards.

Police say they are not soliciting donations via phone calls or door-to-door and that the calls are fraudulent.

Anyone approached by a charity representative should ask for their registered charity number, and crosscheck it on Revenue Canada’s website.

To report any suspicious phone calls or emails, contact Phone Busters by calling 1-888-495-8501 or email info@phonebusters.com. You can also check the Phone Busters website to see an updated list of scams.

Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by this particular scam is asked to cancel the transaction through their credit card company and call police at 403-266-1234 to file a report.
