FREDERICTON – The provincial government and union representing 535 correctional officers, cooks and human services counsellors have reached a tentative collective agreement.
CUPE Local 1251 president, Everett Godfrey, said the workers have been without a contract for almost four years and had voted 97 per cent in favour of a strike last month.
Their strike deadline was Dec. 3. Godfrey said when it passed, workers were preparing to walk out.
“We were trying to say, give us some patience, gives us some time, we’ll get this resolved,” Godfrey said. “The membership had told us Saturday was the last day if it’s not resolved, they were going to do something on their own.”

A tentative collective agreement was reached Saturday.
A release from the Department of Human Resources said the two sides had agreed to withhold details of the agreement pending ratification by the parties.
