This week, Montrealers remember the harrowing tragedy of 14 women who were killed at École Polytechnique 25 years ago.

It is still considered the worst mass shooting in Canadian history.

Global Montreal’s senior anchor Jamie Orchard remembers where she was when she heard about the shootings.

In this article, she recalls being a young journalism student at Concordia University.

Jamie writes “those girls were me. And you. And every other woman or man who does not see barriers in this world but sees opportunities.”

She also spoke with Nathalie Provost, a survivor of the shooting.

“I was amazed that we were a symbol of feminism at that time because for me all the doors were open,” Nathalie Provost, a survivor of the shooting told Global News.

“I’ve never felt there was a difference between men and women. To become an engineer for me was the same as if I was a boy.”

Rose Foster – “Shock, disbelief, sadness…I remember feeling like the city was under a dark cloud for several days. You felt it wherever you went.”

Jimena Bordes – “I can remember feeling scared that a friend at McGill might have been among the victims, and angry and shocked at what had happened. And horrified that just because they were science students, these women were labelled feminists and targeted.”

Chantal Boucher – “Absolutely shocked and mortified. And so sad.”
