Langley man assaulted near bus stop receives over $10,000 from community

A man from Langley who was assaulted on his way home from work last week is amazed at the support he’s received in the days since.

Chris LaFrenier was trying to get a taxi home after missing the last bus from the Logan Avenue bus exchange when two teenagers came out of nowhere and started brutally attacking him.

“I basically got clubbed in the back, and was on the ground, and by the time I tried to get up I had been kicked too many times,” said LaFrenier.

“It was to the point where I couldn’t function anymore.”

LaFrenier suffered a brain hemorrhage and had his work gear and $700 stolen during the assault. Chris’ wife Lauren Blair says he could have died if not for an unknown female witness who called police.

“I want to thank that lady”, says Blair. “Because that’s the only thing that Chris could remember.”

The two teenagers, who are well-known to police, have been arrested and LaFrenier has had his gear returned to him. Langley Mayor Ted Schaffer says the area around the bus loop is “questionable”, and says the city is working with Langley RCMP and other agencies to improve its safety.

“It’s an endlessly challenging area, but we are working hard to correct areas down there. It’s not going to change overnight, but we’re working on it,” he says.

A GoFundMe page created for LaFrenier has received over $10,000 to support his family while he recovers. Any money not used will go to several charities.
