WINNIPEG – Manitoba had more homicides per capita than any other province for the seventh year in a row in 2013, a Statistics Canada report states.
There were 49 homicides in Manitoba in 2013, a drop from 52 in 2012 and 53 in 2011. Of those, 26 were in Winnipeg, a big drop from the 33 reported in 2012. That translates to a rate of 3.87 homicides per 100,000 people. Nationally, there were 505 homicides, for a national rate of 1.44 homicides per 100,000 people.
Among metropolitan areas, Winnipeg was second behind Regina in per capita homicides, with 3.84 per 100,000 population compared to Winnipeg’s 3.24 homicides per 100,000 people. Thunder Bay, which had the highest per capita homicide rate in 2012, was third in 2013 with 2.46 homicides per 100,000 people.
