Truck driver’s quick thinking prevents disaster on Stoney Trail

CALGARY – The driver of a tanker truck got out in the nick of time before his cab went up in flames Monday afternoon.

Fire crews were called to eastbound Stoney Trail near Metis Trail around 2:15 p.m. on reports of a vehicle fire.

The driver of the double tanker truck pulled to the site of the road and called 911 after he noticed smoke. He tried to use his own extinguisher to douse the flames.

When firefighters arrived, they quickly knocked down the fire which had consumed the entire cab.

The truck was hauling fracking fluid with is extremely volatile. Officials say the driver’s quick actions prevented a potentially disastrous situation. The driver is an off-duty firefighter from Strathmore.

No one was injured in the incident but the truck was destroyed.

Traffic on eastbound Stoney Trail was shut down for approximately 20 minutes.
