Keeping warm during the winter months is a battle many of us do not look forward to.
But what about your pet? How do you protect your hairy four-legged friend from the cold?
For Heather Lee, sales representative at Just for Pets, business has been booming since the first snowfall. She said most pet owners are proactive about stocking up on winter gear for their pets.
“Boots would be a high priority and jackets. Jackets and sweaters regardless of the size of animal are being bought,” she said.

Veterinarian Felicia Lloyd said for short coated and smaller pets it’s important to dress them for the colder temperatures to prevent hypothermia and arthritis.
“A snug fitting shirt or sweater can actually act as a little bit of an insulated barrier for them, to just keep their core a little bit warmer,” Lloyd said.
Paws are another thing to be cautious about, as they can be sensitive to the ice and snow. Lloyd said booties are a great way to protect your dogs feet.
“Any surface of the dog or part of the body that’s wet is going to be more susceptible to frostbite.”
Lee said the majority of her customers are not looking to make a fashion statement and are solely focused on keeping their four-legged companions warm.
“Most people are concerned about the well being of their animal,” she said. “It’s not silly when you’re buying a winter coat. These are of necessity.”
At the end of the day it all comes down to common sense. If it is cold enough for you to bundle up, your pet probably should too.
