Man dies after concrete wall collapses at northeast business

CALGARY – Occupational Health and Safety has been called in to investigate after a man appears to have been crushed by a wall.

Just after 1 p.m. Thursday emergency crews were called to the 600 block of 28thStreet N.E..

OHS says the accident took place at NorCal Construction where workers were dismantling a concrete wall when it collapsed and fell on one worker.

“It’s certainly fair to say that when doing demolition work there are certain expectations of companies who engage in that businessm,” says OHS spokesperson Brookes Merritt.

“One expectation of all employers across the province is that they engage in that work in a manner that does not endanger the public or their employees.”

“There were no signs of life and no resuscitative efforts were put forth. That scene was immediately turned over to police and Occupational Health and Safety,” says Adam Loria with EMS.

This is the second workplace fatality in Calgary this week.

A man from Edmonton died Wednesday following injuries he sustained at an industrial accident in Cranston.

OHS says it can take up to two years before any decision over whether charges will be laid.

There have been 45 workplace incidents resulting in fatalities between January and the end of October of this year. Last year there were 52. In 2012 there were 51.
