VANCOUVER – It’s decision day for the fate of an aging elementary school in Vancouver.

General Gordon Elementary School is slated for demolition.

The 100-year-old school is one of several in Vancouver badly in need of seismic upgrades, but after four years of consultation, the school board is recommending the building be replaced with a brand new school.

But, a group of residents is protesting, saying the push for seismic safety is coming at the expense of their community’s heritage.

“We’ve had open houses where the community has come out and supported saving the school,” says Jan Pierce with West Kitsilano Residents Association. “And yet at he end, their quote in the report was that community views are not a vote. So they just seem to be ignoring everything that we say. So we are very disappointed, that is for sure.”

The final decision will be made at a meeting tonight.
