Union Station renos blamed for displacing massive colony of rats

WATCH: A pest control company says the construction at Union Station is displacing rats. And as the rats look to find new homes, experts are warning to keep an eye out. Carey Marsden reports.

TORONTO – Major renovations currently underway at Toronto’s Union Station are being blamed for the displacement of a colony of rats in the downtown core.

Pest control experts say they’ve received a growing number of calls regarding a “sizable” rat population on the move and invading businesses near the Toronto transportation hub on Front Street between Bay Street and York Street.

Pest control operators say underground demolition is forcing the animals to migrate to new areas of downtown and the vermin population can grow if not properly controlled.

“As this rat colony spreads out from Union Station looking for warmth and new homes, it’ll push existing rat populations further out. This isn’t just a downtown problem. It’s a city-wide issue,” said Graff.
