It’s back! Raptors to wear purple throwback jerseys against Wizards

TORONTO – For all those basketball fans still lamenting the demise of bright purple, Jurassic-inspired jerseys, fret no more.

Purple is cool again. More than that – dinosaurs are cool again.

Break out your original Toronto Raptors road jersey (hopefully you didn’t throw yours out when they were described less so as ‘retro,’ more so as ‘flat out atrocious’ and ‘one of the ugliest jerseys of all time’).

During Friday’s game against the Washington Wizards, the Raptors will wear the memorable road jerseys for the first time since May 1999.

The move is part of the team’s 20th Anniversary Nights series. Fans at the game in Toronto Friday will receive a throwback purple t-shirt that features the names of every player in the team’s history.

The Raptors headed into their 20th season carrying high expectations, after winning 48 games last season (a franchise record). The team won the Atlantic Division title for the second time and ended the season in a thrilling first-round playoff battle with the Brooklyn Nets.

“This is the first time since this organization – even before I got here – had heightened expectations and I think that’s a good thing,” said coach Dwane Casey. “It’s something we’ve got to embrace, we’ve got to take it and run with it because it’s going to be there.”
