N.S. mother warns about pin found in daughter’s Halloween treat

COLE HARBOUR, N.S. – A Nova Scotia mother is warning other parents to be vigilant after her daughter found a sewing pin in a chocolate bar she received while trick-or-treating.

Nancy Hayes’ 14-year-old-daughter Ariane and her friends had gone trick-or-treating on Halloween night in the area of Astral Drive and Stratford Drive in Cole Harbour.

On Sunday, Ariane broke apart a piece of Wunderbar and discovered a 2.5-centimetre pin inside.

“I don’t want to imagine what could have happened if she had swallowed, eaten or put the chocolate in her mouth,” said Hayes.

She said the family had often told Ariane to be careful about Halloween candy and she made it a habit to check her treats before eating.

“The first thing she told me, ‘Mom, who would think to do that to kids? You know we’re just kids. We wanted to have fun you know and spend time with our friends. So why are people doing that?'” Nancy Hayes said. “But I have no answer to that question.”

The teen took a photo of the chocolate bar with the pin still inside and posted it to Instagram. The mother of her friend saw the photo and called police.

RCMP have the pin and candy wrapper as evidence and are now trying to find out where Ariane received the chocolate bar.

“This is an enormous public safety issue obviously so it’s extremely important that we make every effort we can to determine the origin of the pin,” Cpl. Greg Church said.

Police are also looking into whether there are similar cases in the province. So far, no one else has come forward with tampered Halloween candy.

The news had other parents in the Cole Harbour neighbourhood concerned.

Kaydee Webber, whose three-year-old son Jayden went trick-or-treating on the same street, said she will be checking the candy more closely from now on.

“It seems crazy that someone would take the time to think about it and put a pin in somebody’s candy to try and hurt somebody,” she said.
