Former Stampeder John Forzani on life support in Palm Springs

Former Calgary Stampeder and businessman John Forzani is on life support in hospital in Palm Springs, California after suffering a stroke or heart attack.

Born and raised in Calgary – Forzani, 67, is the chairman and co-founder of the Forzani Group .

He began his football career with the Stampeders in 1971 as an offensive lineman, the year the team won the Grey Cup.

He and his brothers were a force to be reckoned with on the football field.

Before his playing days ended, John Forzani began what would prove to be a highly-successful business career.

In 1974, he and his brothers opened Forzani’s Locker Room in Calgary.

That was followed by a series of acquisitions – including Sport-Chek International in 1991.

In 2001, Forzani received the Distinguished Canadian Retailer of the Year Award from the Retail Council of Canada.

In 2005, he became a part-owner of the Calgary Stampeders, leading a push to stabilize the team.

Forzani has also been an active community leader, raising thousands of dollars for local charities.

The Forzani Foundation was the driving force behind the annual Mother’s Day Run and Walk – an event that draws thousands of participants each year.
