Quebec judge appointed province’s first-ever female chief justice

OTTAWA – Quebec is getting its first-ever female chief justice.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Quebec Court of Appeal Justice Nicole Duval Hesler as the province’s top judge on Friday.

Duval Hesler replaces Michel Robert, who retired from the bench last month.

She was first appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal five years ago.

The Prime Minister’s Office says Duval Hesler has been a frequent speaker on issues such as human rights and the environment.
