Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger activities cancelled nationwide

EDMONTON – Canada’s Department of National Defence confirms all Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger activities have been temporarily stopped after a soldier was shot and killed at the National War Memorial in Ottawa Wednesday.

“In light of recent events, direction has been issued by the Chief of Reserves and Cadets to temporarily cease Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger activities nationwide as a precautionary measure,” said Daniel Blouin, a communications advisor for the DND.

“While there is no indication that Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers are at risk themselves, we are taking these precautions to ensure the safety of the youth entrusted in our care.

“We will continue to monitor this situation and provide further information and additional direction as soon as possible.

“The safety and welfare of Cadets, Junior Canadian Rangers and their leaders remains our greatest concern and top priority,” Blouin explained.

The Junior Rangers program operates in dozens of very remote communities across Canada.

On Thursday, many provincial and federal buildings remained under increased security in light of the shooting in Ottawa.
