Outgoing Surrey mayor the most popular head of government: Poll

Departing Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts has the highest approval rating among Metro Vancouver mayors, according to a new poll by Insights West.

Watts had an approval rating of 71 per cent, followed by Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan at 67 per cent.

Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman garnered a 65 per cent approval rating, followed by Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie (60%) and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson (52%).

The poll also finds that the municipal governments of the Tri-Cities and Burnaby had the highest overall approval ratings.

In Vancouver, 46 per cent of people said housing was their top concern. In Surrey, 48 per cent of people thought crime was the important issue.

Housing was also top of mind in Richmond (28%) and Burnaby (21%).

Transportation took centre stage on the North Shore (34%) and in Delta, New Westminster and White Rock (all at 29%).

It was also the number one issue in the Tri-Cities (28%) and Langley City and Langley Township (both at 27%).

In Abbotsford, housing concerns nearly tied with poverty at 21 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Economic development was the number one concern in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows at 31 per cent.
