HALIFAX – An Environment Canada meteorologist says the strongest winds and storm surge from a system that lashed the Maritimes have largely passed through the region.
Mel Lemmon says a predicted storm surge for coastal areas of the Northumberland Strait reached its highest point in parts of southeastern New Brunswick on Wednesday, but there were no reports of any major damage.

He says the system is moving through Cape Breton and will continue to bring rain and wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour in Victoria and Inverness counties until noon today.
The high winds have led to scattered power outages for thousands of customers throughout northeastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton.
Lemmon says the winds and rain will persist through the day in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The storm dumped up to 100 millimetres of rain in parts of Nova Scotia on Wednesday closing some roads due to flooding.
