“Code Burgundy” Regina hospitals overcrowded

Overcapacity issues at emergency rooms in Saskatoon and Regina continues to be a problem says the Saskatchewan Health Authority. File / Global News

The Regina Qu’appelle Health Region says two hospitals in the city are running at or near capacity, forcing doctors to treat some patients in hallways.

The health region says the Regina General and Pasqua hospitals have been forced to implement a so-called “code burgundy” unit.

When that happens, space in the emergency room has run out and medical staff must treat patients in other areas, including the hallways.

The region says a code burgundy occurred at Pasqua Hospital on Monday.

Michael Redenbach, who handles primary health care for the region, says in the past both hospitals have cancelled surgeries when they were at overcapacity.

He says they’re trying to prevent that from happening.

Redenbach also says it’s difficult to predict when a hospital is going to face higher than normal admissions.

The official says code burgundies are not uncommon at either hospital, and that it’s not unheard of for both to be dealing with overcrowding at the same time.
