After six days and two major flare ups, the natural gas fire near Prud’homme is finally out.

Crews are not out of the woods yet though. At 9 p.m. Wednesday officials told Global News they’re working on a dangerous procedure.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

SaskEnergy says a new wellhead is in place.

Gas is venting through the replacement. Crews are dumping massive amounts of water into the cavern to force the gas down. Then, once it’s at a safe distance, they’ll attempt to seal off the cavern.

They expect to work through the night in hopes of finishing the job tomorrow.

Evacuations and road barriers remain in place until officials can be sure it’s safe.
